Kraken Again: Why We’re Buying More Before the IPO

Ticker Tape is investing in Kraken for the second time, and we’re buying a couple of blocks of shares. A lot has changed at the company. Part of the appeal is the business model: when you buy or sell Bitcoin, Kraken is just making a ledger entry recording who owns that Bitcoin or a fraction of it. It doesn’t move it, build it or operate it, so there’s very little operating cost tied to the trading platform, and margins run in the 90% range.

That’s why we’re very fond of this company. We’ll likely do a third round if we can get one together before Kraken goes public. It’s one of the companies we really like.

Key points

  • Ticker Tape is investing in Kraken for a second time, buying a couple of blocks of shares.
  • Trades are ledger entries, so the platform has very low operating costs and margins in the 90% range.
  • A third round is likely if it can come together before the IPO.
