How Ticker Tape Invests in Late-Stage Pre-IPO Deals

Ticker Tape invests in pre-IPO deals. The idea is to buy into a company while it’s privately held, sell the shares after it goes public, and capture the spread between the private valuation and the public valuation.

Examples include SoFi, which we bought at $4 a share, Palantir at $10 a share, and SpaceX in the $13 to $14 range. We have liquidated, or are liquidating, each of those after it went public, at a multiple of our entry price.

Key points

  • The strategy: buy late-stage private companies and sell after the IPO.
  • The profit comes from the spread between the private and public valuations.
  • Past examples include SoFi at $4, Palantir at $10 and SpaceX at $13 to $14 a share.
