Space-based data centers are often pitched as the ultimate cooling hack, because space is cold. That’s true, but space doesn’t remove cooling costs. It makes cooling one of the harder problems to solve. With no air, it’s very difficult to cool things that generate heat. You have to build a radiator, which in space means an enormous piece of a particular type of metal, large compared with the data center itself, to radiate heat away.
The real advantage is power. In space you get free, continuous solar power. That’s a big advantage for AI data centers. It just isn’t the cooling advantage people often talk about.
Key points
- Space is cold, but with no air it’s hard to shed heat.
- Space data centers need very large radiators to get rid of heat.
- The real advantage is continuous solar power, not cooling.
