Billionaires Don’t Invest Like You: The Private Equity Allocation

Billionaires and the ultra-wealthy have somewhere in the range of 20% to 40% of their total portfolio in private equity, meaning pre-public companies, venture capital and other private equity investments. That’s before counting alternative investments or real estate.

Add those three areas together and a majority of their portfolios are not in public markets, bonds or cash. In the chart discussed in this short, 71% is in private equity, real estate and real estate debt, and alternative assets combined.

Key points

  • The ultra-wealthy hold roughly 20% to 40% of their portfolios in private equity.
  • That excludes real estate and other alternative investments.
  • Combined, private equity, real estate and alternatives make up 71% in the example shown.
