You Might Already Own SpaceX Without Buying It

Now that SpaceX is public, your 401(k) may own it without you doing a thing. When a company goes public, indexes may add the stock, and any fund that tracks that index has to buy it. SpaceX has been added to the NASDAQ 100, so if you hold the QQQ ETF or another NASDAQ 100 index fund, you now have SpaceX exposure.

But what price did you get? You bought at the post-IPO price, probably in the $140s or $150s. At Ticker Tape, we bought nine rounds of SpaceX, and our investors got in at a much lower price than everyone who bought after the IPO. That’s the difference between owning a company after it goes public and getting access before the IPO.

Key points

  • SpaceX was added to the NASDAQ 100 after going public.
  • Funds tracking that index, such as QQQ, now hold SpaceX, so your 401(k) may too.
  • Index buyers paid the post-IPO price, probably in the $140s or $150s.
  • TTI investors in nine pre-IPO rounds got in at much lower prices.
