Why We Avoid Blind Funds and Use SPVs Instead

We don’t like blind funds. We’re not asking you to hand over your money and let us decide how and when to invest it and when to sell. Instead, we invest our own money in a particular deal. If you want in, you decide how much to put in. We acquire the asset and hold it until it liquidates.

In a pre-IPO deal, we don’t even sell for you. We give you your portion of the shares. If we buy 1,000 shares and you put in 10% of the money, 100 shares go into your trading account, and you decide whether to sell. That’s how the Palantir and SoFi stories happened: some investors didn’t follow what we did, held on and made more money than we did in the long run. We got out quicker and reinvested our cash.

Key points

  • Blind funds put someone else in charge of what you invest in and when you sell.
  • With TTI’s deal-by-deal SPVs, you choose each deal and how much to invest.
  • In pre-IPO deals, investors receive their shares and decide when to sell.
  • Some Palantir and SoFi investors held longer than TTI and earned more.
