We ranked every type of deal we’ve actually invested our own money in, with 1 being best. Surgery centers got a 2: higher return, not correlated to the market, and a very fast return. Emergency rooms and litigation funding each got a 3, for strong returns and no correlation to the stock market. Apartments got a 5: we love them, but returns aren’t as high as our other deals.
Hotels got a 7 because a single hotel concentrates your risk. Restaurants got the bottom score, a 10. It’s a very risky business, and we only did one because it was part of a hotel we’d already invested in. Pre-IPOs? We love them: a great risk-return profile, with lower risk and still higher return.
