Do You Qualify as an Accredited Investor?

There’s a rule you may not have heard of that decides who we’re even allowed to talk to about our deals: you have to be an accredited investor. The SEC requires that if securities aren’t registered through its process, only accredited investors can invest.

To qualify, you need to either earn $200,000 a year, or $300,000 combined with your spouse, with an expectation of continuing to earn that income in the coming years, or have a net worth greater than $1 million. Otherwise, you can’t invest in the private deals Ticker Tape and other private entities do.

Key points

  • Unregistered private offerings are limited to accredited investors under SEC rules.
  • Income test: $200,000 a year, or $300,000 with a spouse, expected to continue.
  • Net worth test: more than $1 million.
  • Without accredited status, you can’t invest in these private deals.
